The Republican controlled Arizona legislature has once again kowtowed to Big Business and its goal of impeding workers rights to organize and bargain collectively for better pay, benefits and working conditions.
This time it comes in the form of a deceptively named ballot measure entitled Secret Ballot; Fundamental Right, which will be placed before Arizona voters next year.
Here is the text of SCR 1026 Secret Ballot; Fundamental Right
The 2010 general election ballot is to carry the question of whether to amend the state Constitution to add an article guaranteeing the right of persons to vote by secret ballot in elections of public officers, ballot measures or union representation.
First off let’s be clear - no one is in danger of losing their right to vote by secret ballot. Secondly, I repeat - no one is in danger of losing their right to vote by secret ballot.SCR 1026 Secret Ballot; Fundamental Right has only one purpose - it's an attempt to circumvent The Employee Free Choice Act, a bill which will be acted upon by the U.S. Congress later this year.
The Employee Free Choice Act levels the playing field and would allow workers to choose between an election and a majority sign up. Currently that decision rests with Fat Cat CEO's and the corporations they control. Workers should decide for themselves how they bargain with employers for better benefits and job security.
