Earlier this month I had the opportunity to attend a roundtable discussion with Vice President Joe Biden on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and its impact on Arizona working families.
Biden highlighted the administration's achievements in implementing the provisions of the Recovery Act as well as acknowledging the economic difficulties still facing Arizona and the rest of the country.
As of October 30th, Arizona businesses and government agencies have received $2,837,556,534 in the form of grants, loans, and contracts - in turn creating or saving 12,283 jobs in the state.
One investment project discussed that will benefit Flight Attendants, Pilots, Airlines, and the approximant 100,000 passengers per day that are flying in and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the re-construction of a taxiway on the north side of the airport.
When completed in February 2010, this $11.7 million Federal Recovery Act funded project will have created 300 new jobs and expanded the taxiway's capability to more efficiently move large commercial aircraft between the north runway and the terminals at Sky Harbor. Until now, the taxiway was only able to handle small aircraft and ground vehicles.
“We’re investing in America’s transportation system,” said Vice President Biden. “And as we do, we’re investing in Arizona workers.”
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is a good start but with Arizona's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rising from 9.1 percent in September to 9.3 percent in October more must be done in order for all of Arizona's working families to get on the "Road to Recovery" and step off onto the firm ground of economic security.
The AFL-CIO and its allies are again leading the vanguard in the call for Congress and the Obama administration to care for the jobless and put America back to work.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will be visiting Phoenix on December 7th for a "Solidarity Day of Action, Putting Arizona Back to Work."
Trumka will discuss in a Worker's Roundtable the difficult times unemployed workers are finding in Arizona and the programs that are helping, as well as what else needs to be done to put workers back to work.
Additionally, President Trumka will lead a rally at the airport to support Airport Workers.
Approximate times are 12:00 to 1:00pm for the Workers Roundtable and 1:30 to 3:00pm for the Airport Workers Rally.
